Distilleries in Maryland make hand sanitizer instead of alcoholic drinks

Distilleries in Maryland are making hand sanitizes to help fill an expected shortage, joining a trend in states experiencing community spread of the novel coronavirus.

At least five distilleries in Maryland, which has 58 positive cases as of Tuesday afternoon, have started making sanitizes to distribute to customers or local government agencies, said Kevin Atticks, executive director of the Maryland Distillers Guild.

Distilleries, which typically produce alcoholic drinks such as whiskey or bourbon, have the machinery and expertise to make alcohol-based disinfectants, Atticks said. Even during regular production, they often create a byproduct of impure alcohol that they use as an in-house sanitizer.
